Vila-seca’s giants

Vila-seca’s giants

Galceran: Its figure is made of fiberglass and is supported by a wooden structure. It has a height of 4 meters and weighs about 70 kilos. It represents the central character of a miraculous event, the Rescue of Saint Stephen or the Hundred Maidens, according to this legend, Galceran de Pinós, son of the lords of Bagà and admiral of the Fleet of the Count Ramon Berenguer IV, was miraculously liberated in 1152 by intercession of Sant Esteve. After that, they found themselves on the road that went from Vila-seca to the El Racó beach with the entourage that was heading to pay the rescue that the Moorish King of Almeria had demanded, which prevented the delivery of the hundred maidens from the rescue.

This episode has united the villages of Bagà and Vila-seca. The giant was baptized together with the giant Maiden of the Rescue on May 1, 1999. Their godfathers are the giants of Bagà.

Designed by order of the Town Hall, it is the work of the artist Ramon Ferran from Reus. The dress and its ornamentation were designed by the seamstress Rosa Clavé from Vila-seca.
